13th February 2009
near Roscommon town
This morning I saw the Little Egret along the Roscommon Athlone Road where it has been for a while.  It actually flew across the road as I pulled up and landed a little bit upstream.  There was also a Green Sandpiper just downstream from the bridge which I was able to observe for 10 to 15 mins.  The Little Egret was still there in the afternoon but there was no sign of the Green Sandpiper.  I also saw a Merlin a couple of miles north of Roscommon town along the Boyle Rd. (M. Bell).

16th June 2008:  This Yellowhammer was photographed near Lecarrow today, in the area where Michael Bell recently saw four of these colourful buntings.

Directions:
This site is very close to the main Roscommon-Athlone road -  between this raod and Lough Ree.  Turn east at the pub/coffee shop in Lecarrow, continue past derelict cut-stone mill on right, small school on left.  About 2-3 miles down follow this road around sharply to the right (caution very blind bend) at the gates to Rinndoon Estate.  Continue on this road for a mile or so, until you come to some largish fields of cereals (maize under plastic, barley).  The Yellowhammers have been on the wires along the roadside and on the hedges along the road and between the fields.
