Birdwatch Sligo Outing to Inch Levels and Inch Lake, near Burt, Co. Donegal
and
Bunduff,
Mullaghmore,
Co. Sligo |
October
20th, 2008, Sligo Birdwatch members went on a day trip to the Inch
Island and Inch Levels area of Donegal near Burt. The area has two
excellent hides overlooking the mud flats of Lough Swilly, in addition
there are several huge flocks of Whooper Swans in the fields in the area. A count of one field alone gave an estimated 1,200 Whoopers, who
were somewhat jumpy if we left the cars for a closer look.
Whoopers were also present in other fields in the area in
significant numbers. In
addition to the Whoopers the following were sighted from the hides: Great
Crested Grebe, Cormorant, Grey Heron, Greylag, Greenland White-fronted
and Canada Geese, Greenshank, Ruff, Wigeon, Teal, Mallard, Pochard,
Tufted Duck, Scaup, Goldeneye, Lapwing, and Golden Plover.
On the return trip to Sligo we stopped briefly at Bunduff Lake, Mullaghmore where a Kestrel was hovering over the ground (M. Enright, S. McCanny, M. Bell, G. Scott, P. Leigh-Doyle, K. Craig, S. Garcia). |

A
flock of approx. 700 - 800 Brent Geese were feeding on the eel-grass
beds opposite Gibraltar Point but they were flushed repeatedly by four
people trekking on horse-back across the mudflats with loose dogs (M. Casey) Earlier in the day, 1,073 Light-bellied Brent
were counted at this site, of which 17 were ringed. Some of these
were instantly recognisable as birds ringed in the Canadian Arctic,
Iceland and Ireland. 10 birds of the 156 ringed in the very successful
cannon-netting operation at Enniscrone in February 2008 have been
re-sighted in Co. Sligo to date (M. Enright). |
18th October 2008

A Little Egret was seen along the Drumcliff River (M. Bell). |
17th/18th October 2008
Numerous locations in Co. Sligo |
| Redwings were heard calling on migration, both by day and by night, at a range of locations around Co. Sligo (D. Skehan, M. Casey). With
no reported sightings of Redwngs on the ground so far this autumn,
could these have been Icelandic birds migrating straight through the
area? |

A Peregrine Falcon was
roosting on the parapet of the tower of Sligo Cathedral at about 8 pm.
At about 8.10 pm on quite a dark night, it flew from the tower,
and pursued and killed one of two gulls that flew over the Cathedral
(almost certainly a Black-headed Gull),
and returned with its prey to the parapet, where it proceeded to pluck
it, resulting in a snowstorm of feathers falling through the beams of
the Cathedral floodlights. The falcon was still on the parapet at
11pm (M. Casey). |

October 2008: This juvenile Merlin allowed extremely close approach when
perched on a concrete post beside Strandhill beach. This perfectly composed photo, with Knocknarea in the background, was
taken using a mobile phone!
Juvenile birds can exhibit extreme
versions of the "freeze" reflex which is adopted when a threat is
perceived. This trait normally disappears shortly after fledging.
A proportion of the Merlins seen in the west of Ireland in winter
are believed to be Icelandic birds. Given the location, this may
have been an exhausted migrant.

October 2008: The autumn migration of the Barnacle Geese that
were satellite-tagged by Dr David Cabot on the Inishkea Islands off
Belmullet in Co. Mayo can be followed on the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust website
- one bird (Oisín) has already returned to the Inishkeas, two
are in the Western Isles, off Scotland, and one is still in Iceland.
Click here or on the image above to go to the WWT website.
Use the drop-down menus on the top left to select the relevant
population (e.g. Greenland Barnacle Goose) and the season (e.g. 2008
autumn). If you highlight one bird at a time in the list on the
right, you then can read the data collected (speed, heading, altitude,
etc) at each point it was tracked by hovering over the dots along the
bird's trace.
Some of the migrating geese have reached quite high speeds over the
open Atlantic (up to 80 km/h), possibly with the aid of tailwinds, and
much of the distance seems to have been flown at surprisingly low
altitudes (as low as 3m - 4m much of the time).

5th October 2008: NOT A SLIGO SIGHTING..............unfortunately!
Regular BirdWatch Sligo contributor Paul Keogh made the trip from
Dromahair, Co Leitrim to Letterfrack, Co. Galway to see this juvenile
American Little Blue Heron, which was found by Dermot Breen (another
regular contributor, now based in Connemara) and Aonghus O
Dónaill two weeks ago. Dermot and Aonghus clinched the
bird's identity and spread the word at the weekend. The juvenile
of this species is very similar to our own Little Egret, and is
distinguished by the greenish legs, thicker neck, broader-based bill and
dark primary tips. For anyone travelling to see the bird, the
directions could not be simpler - "Park at the Avoca Hand Weavers shop
in Letterfrack and view from the car park".
This is the first sighting of this species in Europe. It
breeds in the south-eastern US.

October 2008: This Peregrine Falcon was pictured roosting on the
tower of Sligo Cathedral tonight, illuminated by the Cathedral
floodlighting. Good numbers of Peregrine Falcons have been seen
in Sligo this autumn, and the species is now vying with Kestrel as the
most commonly seen bird of prey in the county. A fantastic
recovery from the brink of extinction in Ireland just three decades ago.
