30th November 2004: Waxwings move south into western Europe in irregular large irruptive movements ('waxwing years") which may be triggered by a particularly good breeding season or by hard weather in Scandinavia.  The rear view of the bird in the middle photo above shows the characteristic red waxy tips to the secondary wing feathers which give these birds their name.

This flock of Waxwings were seen in the grounds of St. Johns Hospital on the Ballytivnan Road. The birds spent most of  the time in the tall trees at the entrance to the hospital, but would move to nearby berry bushes at times.

Several birds were seen and heard near the Lidl supermarket. This record ties in with the large invasion of Waxwings into Ireland.

This represents the third Black Brant found in County Sligo this year and constitutes the fourth ever record for Sligo.  The Mediterranean Gull is unringed and so a different individual to the one seen in Sligo town in September. Both birds were  seen from the causeway to Coney Island.

The bird was seen near Standalone Point. Possibly this Buzzard may have been present at Lissadell during the weekend.  The Buzzard most likely originated from the increasing population in County Donegal.
The adult Ringbilled Gull was seen at this site on the 21st of October.
