Corncrake numbers solid in West

BirdWatch Ireland's Corncrake Fieldworker for Connacht, Tim Gordon reports that an early return was the first evidence that Corncrakes are holding their own this year.  More details, as well as an update on the role of cat contraception in Corncrake conservation in Connemara is on the News page.
Unusual sighting on marine survey ship
Among the usual mix of cetaceans, the Marine Institute's Celtic Explorer vessel had an unexpected visitor last week 100 miles off western France - see photo for 6th May here.  Thanks to Gerard Scott who spotted this.
Bulletins from Brad
In early December, the manager of RSPB Reserves in Fermanagh (a regular visitor to Sligo & contributor to this website), Brad Robson, his partner, Anja Rosler, who works on conservation projects and their four-year-old daughter, Reika, left to take up a one-year “adventure” on the world’s most remote inhabited island, Tristan da Cunha in the South Atlantic. Over the past few months they have been finding their feet as they enjoy summer in a totally different environment from Fermanagh.
Brad has posted a couple of interesting articles about his experiences in the Fermanagh local paper, the Impartial Reporter.

Corncrake Sligo Corncrake update 25 May 2009

Ciaràn Davis was first to report hearing Sligo’s returning Corncrakes this year when he heard two, one on Oyster, the other possibly on Coney Island, on 29 April. Since then, Patsy Burke reports hearing three on Oyster on 21 May, two at the enclosure and one at the east end, and Shaun Connor also reports one on Coney. Corncrakes on Oyster are very difficult to count as they raise echoes off the buildings and walls. Where two birds are calling, their calls are out of phase; if you hear multiple calls but they all follow after the same pause and never "cross" (ie go out of phase) then you are listening to one bird plus its echoes.

Last year there were four Corncrakes in Sligo, not including one which may have made nesting attempts at Ardogelly, near Dromore West, and at Aughrus Point, and others at Carrownagleragh, near Coolaney, and Mullaghmore, which are thought to have been passing through.

Nationally, there are three Corncrakes in the Shannon Callows and at least two have been heard at Valentia, Co Kerry.

Painted Ladies on the move - Migrant butterfly invasion predicted
Keep an eye out for this colourful migrant in the coming weeks.  It has bred in unprecedented numbers in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco and has been moving north since February.  Observers reported estimates of 150,000 caterpillars per hectare in some areas to the south of the Atlas Mountains in the early part of the spring.

The one on the right was in the car park of Oranmore church, Co. Galway today (29th May 2009).

See a note on the species here

An article on this influx from the Guardian newspaper in the UK is here.
