21st May 2007: This Wood Warbler has been observed singing in the young trees around the Visitors' Centre rather than the mature oak woods in Glenveagh, which would be more typical habitat for this species, and where Wood Warblers have been seen in the past at this site.
20th-21st May 2007
Visitors' Centre, Glenveagh National Park,
Co. Donegal
A Wood Warbler has been singing in the young birch and Willow trees by the Glenveagh National Park Visitors' Centre in Co. Donegal for the past two days (D. Breen).  Wood Warblers are not common in Ireland and tend to be seen in very small numbers at a handful of traditional sites, usually ancient oak woods, including Brackloon Wood, near Westport, Co. Mayo, and at Glendalough in Co. Wicklow.

Further information on Glenveagh, including directions to the National Park are available here.  Anyone visiting the location should be aware of the presence of a semi-feral Tamworth pig in the woods(!).

6th May 2007
Oyster Island,
near Rosses Point,
Sligo Bay
Two Corncrakes heard and seen on Oyster Island today.......... from the mainland! (P. Keogh)

Please Note:  Paul saw these birds from the mainland at the Rosses Point Sailing Club Car Park, which would appear to offer a unique opportunity to observe these elusive and rarely seen birds on Oyster Island without disturbing them.  Paul's account of where he saw them is reproduced below in case anyone else wants to have a look from the mainland.  Oyster Island is private property, and it would be counter-productive to go onto the island in any case, as Corncrakes would not call or reveal themselves if disturbed.

"I brought out the telescope on Sunday and picked up two birds from the car park at the Rosses Point sailing club.  They were in the grassy area to the left of the big wall where the houses are. I had great views of both birds with one even jumping up on to the wall before flying off to the field to the right of the last house on the island (toward the light house), leaving the other bird, where it remained feeding.

All in all my best views of Corncrake ever."
