Greenfinch Fault Bars

29th March 2009:
This photo shows fault bars in the tail feathers iof a young female Greenfinch which was trapped and ringed in a garden near Tubbercurry.

Developing feathers in young nestlings grow at a very fast yet uniform rate.  It is usually possible to see subtle banding in long feathers, which reflects each day's growth - so-called "growth bars".  In bad weather, the parents may be unable to bring home enough (or any) food on some days, but feather growth continues regardless, and consequently that day's feather growth is of very poor quality.  As all the feathers are growing together, this weakness occurs at the same part of each feather, creating visible "fault bars".  This young female Greenfinch obviously had some very hungry days during the misery of last "summer" as she waited for her parents to bring food to the nest.  She has moulted some tail feathers (which show the characteristic broader shafts and rounder tips of adult-type tail feathers), but the pattern is still very clear.

19th March 2009:
This pair of Tree Sparrows were prospecting for nest sites in the ruins of an old stone cottage.  This species is clinging on in small numbers in Co. Sligo.  The sites are all coastal, and the presence of livestock farming and ruins/farm buildings with suitable nest sites also appear to be important factors.

28th February 2009:  The male King Eider struggles to swallow a Starfish at Lissadell.  Both the male (right) and female (left) have been consuming remarkable numbers of Starfish during their lengthy stay in Drumcliff Bay, where they have been for almost two months.

Dr Don Cotton has identified the starfish in this photo as Asteria rubens!
