King Eiders, Lissadell Female King Eider with Great Black-backed Gull

4th January 2009: Photos above of the King Eiders at Lissadell submitted by visiting UK birder Gavin Thomas, who had a productive weekend in the north-west (see Recent Sightings page).  The birds are never far apart, and are shadowed by a Great Black-backed Gull which mugs them regularly for their catches.

The two King Eiders at Lissadell.  Light conditions were only slightly better today.

Record shots, taken in poor light, of the first-winter female (top left) and male King Eiders found in Drumcliff Bay at Lissadell, Co. Sligo by Paul Keogh today.
