Jay

Images  © Val Robus 2010

1st January 2010: This Jay was photographed in the garden of Val Robus, near Coolaney, Co Sligo. Jays seem to be on the increase because ofthe increased area of broadleaf woodland , but are still a scarce bird in the west.

Eider

Possible dresseri Eider in Fanad, Co. Donegal

If you are visiting the north-west in what is left of the Christmas holidays, it may be worth having a look for this Eider in Glasagh Bay, Fanad, Co. Donegal, which appears to be of the North American race dresseri. It was found by Wilton Farrelly and Derek Charles on 2nd January 2010, and the image on the left (taken with a mobile phone through a telescope) shows the main features of this race:

1) Big lobes at the top of the bill!
2) Large orange bill.
3) Sails - initially not clear but after the bird preened, these showed clearly.
4) The green on the neck was more extensive than the accompanying Eider and extended under the black cap.
5) Fine black line between bill and feathering.

Video Footage of 'Conall', the Golden Eagle on King's Mountain

Click the 'Play' button on the left to see video footage of Conall, the Golden Eagle. He was filmed as he flew by King's Mountain, Glencar, Co Sligo by Barry Brennan in mid-December. This bird is part of the first generation of Golden Eagles reared in the wild in ireland by re-introduced Scottish birds. Ireland's Golden Eagles became extinct as a result of human persecution in Victorian times.

Barry's photos of 'Conall' are in our December 2009 Gallery page, and photos of Sligo's other wintering Eagle, 'Male Star' the White-tailed Eagle at Ballyconnell are on the January 2010 and December 2009 Gallery pages.

Further information on both re-introduction projects is available on the Golden Eagle Trust's website, www.goldeneagle.ie

Some ring-reading news from Sligo:

Common Gull longevity record for EJ90872

A metal-ringed Common Gull (top left) whose ring was read at Aghamore Pier, Lough Gill, Co. Sligo on 20th June 2008 has been confirmed as a new longevity record for a BTO-ringed Common Gull, according to the 2008 BTO Ringing Report, which is published in the Dec 2009 issue of the journal "Ringing and Migration". The gull was originally ringed as a nestling on Carrowmore Lake, near Bangor Erris, Co. Mayo on the 4th June 1983 by Oscar Merne, so it was just over 25 years old when it was re-found. It was looking very sprightly, so hopefully has made it through the recent bad weather and may live a few more years!

Lough Mask gulls in Sligo

This Darvic-ringed Black-headed Gull (bottom left) was in Doorly Park today (12th January 2010), and was ringed as a nestling on Lough Mask Co. Mayo last summer (2nd June 2009). This is its first re-sighting, as was the case with a 2007-ringed adult Black headed Gull from the same scheme seen at Quay Street car park last week. This project has also had its first UK re-sighting this week, with one of their birds seen in Falmouth, Cornwall. Very few birds have been seen north of the ringing site, and most of these have been in Sligo.

Polish-ringed Jack Snipe from Sligo is a first for the BTO ringing scheme

A metal ring that was recovered from a Jack Snipe shot by hunters at Cummeen Strand on 27th October 2008 was submitted to the BTO by local ecologist & naturalist Dr Don Cotton. This bird was ringed at Lisewo, Lichnowy, Poland eight weeks earlier, on 1st September 2008. This record was the first recovery of a Polish-ringed Jack Snipe in Britain or Ireland. The bird moved 1,782 km west from the ringing site on its migration to Sligo - most of our wintering Jack Snipe breed in north-eastern Scandinavia and Russia.

BBC Peregrines Derby

Cathedral Peregrines have similar hunting strategies in Derby & Sligo

Unique footage of a Peregrine Falcon struggling with a night-flying Woodcock was captured recently by a night-vision camera on Derby Cathedral in the UK - see BBC report here.

Although nocturnal hunting is not usually associated with falcons, this behaviour has been seen before, although probably not filmed. Sligo Cathedral occasionally hosts roosting Peregrines, and similar behaviour was described on this website two winters ago.

17th October 2008
Sligo Cathedral: A Peregrine Falcon was roosting on the parapet of the tower of Sligo Cathedral at about 8 pm. At about 8.10 pm on quite a dark night, it flew from the tower, and pursued and killed one of two gulls that flew over the Cathedral (almost certainly a Black-headed Gull), and returned with its prey to the parapet, where it proceeded to pluck it, resulting in a snowstorm of feathers falling through the beams of the Cathedral floodlights. The falcon was still on the parapet at 11pm (M. Casey).

The observer comments:

'The eagle was in the fields between Yellow Strand and the Bent road (parallel road to the beach) in the wider area of Maugherow just off the Raghly peninsula towards Ballyconnell. I saw the eagle on 4 consecutive days from 31.12. till 03.01.10, yesterday. I didn't see him flying. On most occasions he was sitting on a fence post, once for over 2 hours. I saw him also standing on a grass mound in a field relatively close to the road, maybe 50 to 100 metres and the same distance to a house. He has 2 tags on his wings, a green one on the left wing and a white one on the right wing. The pattern on the tags is a star. I believe its 'Male Star' '

Seen at approx 14.00. He looked quite scruffy, probably had his plumage fluffed against the cold. His identifying star tags, green on his left wing white on his right could easily be seen in the scope . He was aprox. 200m from the road. On approaching, across the field, to within 150m, the bird lazily took flight towards Raghly.
