Sligo One Storm Petrel (M.Bell) 18.08.06 Aughris Head At Aughris Head there were a few gannets and good numbers of kittiwake and one Manx Shearwater flew by. Cetaceans added a little colour to the rather quiet sea-watching in the form of at least 8 Bottlenosed dolphins (M.Bell) 03.08.06 Quay Street Car Park, Sligo A second winter Common Gull ring no. EG 55359 was seen today (M.Casey). This bird was ringed on Copeland island in Co. Down in 2005 and spent last winter at this site. These repeat sightings of ringed gulls in Sligo Harbour both within winter seasons and between winter seasons are building up a picture of a stable wintering group of gulls originating in Northern Ireland/Northern Britain/Northern Europe and wintering in Sligo Harbour. This naturally has implications for habitat preservation, especially when there is so much development pressure on the harbour area of Sligo. Although we think of these as 'our' birds this flock consists to some extent of wintering migrants from neighbouring countries, and the future security of their wintering site is in our hands. 02.08.06 Quay Street Car Park, Sligo A Common Gull ring no. ET47509 is present at this site for at least its third consecutive year(M.Casey). This bird was ringed at Loch Tarff in the Scottish Highlands. it has spent the entire winter here for the last two years and may well do so again 01.08.06 Quay Street Car Park, Sligo Adult Ring-Billed Gull with other gulls at high tide roost. Danish-ringed Black-headed Gull still present (M.Casey) |
