Calling Corncrake on Oyster Island.  This is an early record and this bird is likely to be returning for a third season and is clearly audible from Rosses Point, especially at night. (D. Gunn via D. Cotton, T. Gordon)

Marsh Harrier seen on Upper Lough Erne, near Inishrooske, on the eastern side of the lake (B. Robson)

(1 mile north of Sligo town)
 A small dark heron was seen flying north-east  towards Glencar in rapid and direct flight at 9 am this morning, and about 100m above ground level, as though migrating. (D.Cotton) 

Unfortunately the brief and distant views did not permit specific identification (a stray Night Heron from the continent seems  likely) and there have been no further reports of the bird.  Worth keeping in mind however if you are out on wetlands in Cavan/Leitrim/Fermanagh  over the next couple of days....

18th April 2007: White Wagtails on the Sligo coast on passage to their breeding grounds in Iceland are another landmark of spring, and the Ballyconnell and Raghley areas of Sligo are very reliable sites in late April/early May to see this subspecies of the resident Pied Wagtail that breeds in Ireland.
